THE LOCATION
Kumana sits on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast, a quieter alternative to the country's more famous parks. It holds one of the highest leopard densities anywhere in the world, with well over 80 individual leopards identified and tracked here in recent years. This is prime leopard country, without the crowds.
For photographers, that means fewer jeeps and more room to actually work a sighting. The park's mix of open scrubland, dense forest, and waterholes gives you varied backgrounds in a single morning, and Kumana's leopards are relaxed around vehicles without ever feeling overrun by them. Sloth bear, elephant, and a serious wading bird population round out the frame.
We base you close to the park for first-light entry and last-light exits, with trackers who know individual leopards by name and territory. No chasing radio calls across the park. Just patient, well-positioned waiting for cats that are genuinely there to be found.
