Africa's elephant kingdom, beneath Kilimanjaro

Amboseli National Park sits in southern Kenya, on the border of Tanzania, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Spanning 392 square kilometres of open savanna, ancient marshlands, and acacia woodland, it's home to some of Africa's largest free-roaming elephant herds — including a handful of the continent's last surviving super-tusker bulls.

For wildlife photographers, Amboseli is unmatched for one thing: elephants framed against a snow-capped peak. The open terrain gives you unobstructed sight lines and the kind of dust-filled, golden-hour light that makes Amboseli the most photographed elephant landscape on Earth. Giraffes, lions, cheetahs, and flamingos round out the species list — but the elephants are the headline.

We work the park's quieter sectors, away from the crowded southern marshes, where you can photograph entire family groups without sharing the frame with other vehicles. Pre-dawn drives for elephants emerging from the wetlands, sunset positioning for the Kilimanjaro silhouette, and guides who know exactly where the big bulls roam.
