Solio Game Reserve rhinos
KENYA

SolioGame Reserve

East Africa's oldest private rhino sanctuary — where over 500 black and white rhinos roam in record density, where the Aberdare foothills meet Mount Kenya's snow line, and where Kenya's modern conservation story began.

THE LOCATION

Africa's first private rhino sanctuary, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares

Solio Game Reserve sits in Laikipia County, central Kenya, framed by Mount Kenya to the east and the Aberdare Range to the west. Established in 1970 as one of Africa's first private rhino sanctuaries, its 17,500 acres of open acacia woodland are home to over 500 black and white rhinos — one of the densest concentrations of rhino on Earth.

For wildlife photographers, Solio offers something almost impossible elsewhere: close-up, ground-level rhino encounters without crowds. Open acacia woodland gives you clean compositions, the soft Laikipia light favours intimate portraits, and the private setting means you'll have most sightings to yourself. Lion, leopard, buffalo, zebra, and giraffe round out the species list — but the rhinos are the headline.

We position you for the right moments — pre-dawn drives when the rhinos are still moving, golden-hour light against Mount Kenya's silhouette, and night drives in the surrounding conservancy for leopard and hyena. With Solio's private rangers and our photographer-trained guides, you'll work the reserve like you live there.

WHY SOLIO

Four reasons photographers come back.

Ground Level
Ground Level
01Ground Level

Up close. Ground level. Unmatched access.

Solio's intimate size and habituated rhinos let you work at eye level with the subject — the kind of close-up, ground-level frames most photographers spend a career chasing.

02Rhinos

One of Kenya's most concentrated rhino populations.

Over 500 black and white rhinos roam Solio's reserve — the highest density in Kenya, and one of the highest on the continent. Sightings aren't lucky; they're guaranteed.

03Private Safaris

Maximum 3 photographers per group.

Three photographers per vehicle, by design. No fighting for angles, no compromised compositions — just space, time, and unobstructed views every drive.

04Dramatic Light

Dust-filled sunsets. Stormy skies. Soft morning glow.

The Laikipia highlands deliver the weather and light photographers dream about — long dust-lit sunsets, brooding storm fronts, and that soft glow before dawn when rhinos still hold the foreground.
